Outside Stadthuys Building

The Stadthuys which means the municipal town hall was built by Dutch on the ruins of a Portuguese fort during the 1650's after having taken over from the Portuguese in 1641. It used to be the official residence of the Dutch Governor until as early as 18th century and it is now the Historic and Ethnography Museum which has many traditional bridal costumes and relics on display. Nearby, one will also find the Christ Church built in 1753 which is the St. Francis Xavier church, which is another great example of the Dutch architecture.

This building is in red colour and is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. Inside you will experience Dutch Colonial architecture, substantial solid doors and louvred windows. As it is no longer the residence of the governor, it is now a history museum (RM10 per person) which exhibit history from the great Malay Sultanate and the Portuguese, Dutch and British invasions, to the present day. The building is still tough although it was nearly 300 years old.

It is located in Banda Hilir Melaka, nearby the Jonker Walk. If you want to have a better visit and view, you may enjoy the trishaw ride outside the building for RM40. The trishaw were all decorated beautifully and with music as well. Outside the building, there were many stalls selling handy craft and many wonderful stuffs. You surely wanted all to buy all these souvenirs for your love one.
